Framework for Effective Questioning
Using data gathered from a series of observations made at selected Beaconhouse schools, this report details a framework for effective questioning which can be used by teachers as a tool to improve their questioning techniques.
A series of observations were made at selected Beaconhouse schools to identify gaps that need to be addressed to add real value for the current level of questioning by teachers. These, coupled with existing literature, were used to design a framework for effective questioning, which can be used by teachers as a tool to improve their questioning techniques and its associated areas with a primary aim of developing skills and behaviors that may lead to improvement of teacher questioning techniques in the classroom. These may eventually lead to improving student learning outcomes in the long run.
The framework is an adaptation of some of the works by Jackie A. Walsh and Beth D. Sattes in their book ‘Thinking through Quality Questioning: Deepening Student Engagement’ and draws support from the necessary literature, which has been contextualized to address some of the challenges that were recognized as a result of data that had been collected in the aforementioned school observations.
