What Matters Most: Teacher Survey for Job Satisfaction

This research report presents the findings of the 2019 teacher survey “What Matters Most”, which explored teachers’ perceptions across four key domains: organizational realignment, workload, curriculum implementation, and teacher autonomy and satisfaction. The survey, conducted system-wide from Early Years to A-Level/IBDP, received responses from 4,570 teachers (54% response rate), with representation from all regions — Centre (51%), North (26%), and South (24%).

Results reveal that most teachers were familiar with the organizational realignment and acknowledged that the vision of placing schools “at the centre” was being achieved to a great or moderate extent. However, increased workload emerged as a major concern, particularly among Subject Leads (SLs) and Instructional Coaches (ICs), who reported limited time for professional development and planning. Many teachers expressed that while responsibilities had increased, autonomy and decision-making remained uneven across schools.

Regarding curriculum implementation, over half of the respondents felt supported, but many emphasized the need for more targeted training, clearer communication, and adequate resources. Teachers also reported frequent use of their own materials and technology tools to supplement limited school resources. A majority felt confident integrating the Beaconhouse Learner Profile (BLP) and educational technology but requested stronger leadership support and more structured professional learning opportunities.

On teacher motivation and satisfaction, key drivers identified included recognition, professional growth, quality of supervision, and positive interpersonal relationships. Most teachers reported feeling respected, motivated, and capable of making a meaningful educational difference, though financial compensation and excessive administrative work were recurring demotivators.

Overall, the report highlights a teaching community that is committed, professionally aware, and adaptive, yet seeking greater clarity, collaboration, and systemic support to balance workload, strengthen professional growth, and enhance the implementation of Beaconhouse’s educational vision.
