BYOAD Year 1 Impact
This report, developed by the Education Department, Beaconhouse Head Office, Lahore, presents the findings of Year 1 of the Bring Your Own Approved Device (BYOAD) initiative implemented across Classes 5–7. The study evaluates how the integration of student-owned Chromebooks and digital pedagogies has impacted teaching practices, student engagement, and overall learning experiences during the first full year of system-wide implementation.
Adopting a mixed-methods approach, the study gathered quantitative data from 713 teachers, 1,083 students, and 120 school heads, alongside 18 focus group discussions across all regions. Findings show a positive overall shift in engagement and collaboration, with over 80% of students and teachers reporting higher levels of classroom participation and interactivity. Teachers widely adopted Google Workspace, Canva, and AI-based tools, especially in Science, English, and Mathematics, where digital simulations and collaborative tasks led to improved conceptual understanding and motivation.
However, challenges persisted. Approximately 76% of students reported internet connectivity issues, and over 50% of schools experienced infrastructure constraints (e.g., Wi-Fi coverage, charging access). Urdu and Islamiat teachers highlighted a lack of typing tools and localized resources, limiting equitable technology integration. Concerns around screen fatigue, classroom monitoring, and digital distractions were also noted by both teachers and parents.
Despite these constraints, the report underscores that the BYOAD programme significantly enhanced independent learning, digital literacy, and creativity. The majority of teachers demonstrated foundational understanding of the SAMR model and ISTE standards, while also showing strong commitment to ethical digital citizenship and student well-being.
Recommendations include strengthening Wi-Fi infrastructure, expanding subject-specific digital training, embedding SAMR/ISTE-based lesson planning, and developing monitoring and parental engagement tools. The report concludes that Year 1 of BYOAD marks a transformative yet transitional phase toward a sustainable Beaconhouse EdTech Ecosystem, calling for strategic scaling through improved infrastructure, equity measures, and continuous professional development.
